Introduction to Psychological Testing

TEST TAKING INSTRUCTIONS

BRING ALL OF YOUR TEST RESULTS PROFILES AND PRINTOUTS

IN YOUR MANILA ENVELOPE TO CLASS ON THE ASSIGNED DATE

----------------------

Confidentiality: If you value your privacy, you may wish
to keep your testing results in a private place -- away
from easy access by roommates, friends, family, etc.
When requested to enter your name, you may wish to identify
yourself by the last 4 numbers of your student ID number
(or some other number) instead of your name.

All of the tests you will take are available on the web.

Use any web-connected computer with a printer to take
these tests.

If you are puzzled or upset by any of the test results, keep
in mind that many of these online tests do not have published
reliability and validity data. You should view the results with
some caution and skepticism. Also, if you would like a professional
psychologist to help you interpret your results, you may wish to
make an appointment with a psychologist at the LMU Student
Psychological Services (see http://www.lmu.edu/page1330.aspx ).
As a psychology major, this could be a good educational experience
in itself.

PERSONALITY TESTS:

SELF-RATINGS ON THE NEO

Before you take the NEO, rate yourself on the various personality
traits. Go here if you have not done so already.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE NEO PERSONALITY TEST:

To take the IPIP-NEO (an alternate form of the NEO) go to:

You may take either the long or short version of the test.
Print your results (remember to set printing to "Landscape".
When you are ready to print, click File / Properties / and click
on the Landscape radio button).

Put your printout in your Test Results manila folder.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE KEIRSEY TEMPERAMENT SORTER
(a test similar to the MYERS-BRIGGS TYPE INDICATOR)

INTELLIGENCE TEST:

INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAKING THE IQ TEST.

IMPORTANT: This IQ test has unknown reliability and validity, so
interpret the results with caution and skepticism.

The purpose of this exercise is NOT to get an accurate assessment of
your IQ. Instead, I want you to have the experience of taking a
computerized IQ test, and for you to note that without
statistics about the reliability and validity of a test,
it is difficult to interpret the results.

Note how a single IQ score can be rather simplistic and misleading.
You can see why it would be more helpful if your score was reported using
Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) to construct 68% and 95% confidence
bands. Remember, since no information about reliability or validity
about this test is available, it is impossible for you to judge the accuracy
of your obtained IQ score, or, if this test is likely to predict
future performance. Since we know nothing about the reliability
and validity of this test, we cannot interpret the test results.

VOCATIONAL / CAREER TESTS:

Strong Interest Inventory (SII)

Information about this test will be given in class. Once you
you have the login information, go to:

Enter the login name and password given to you in class
(or email me to get it if you missed it).

Leave the User ID area blank. Then click on "Log In"

On the next screen, click on "Take It!" next to the Strong
Interest Inventory.

On the following screen, click on the Batch Name drop down menu
and select "Steave Savage".

Enter the requested information (for your personal ID, enter
your social security number.)

You will not get your results immediately after you take the
test. Instead, one of the LMU career counselors will bring
them to class and present a guest lecture regarding how to
interpret your results.

Put the results in your test results manila envelope.

This test is optional, but I highly recommend that
you take it.

Put the Rokeach Values Survey that you took the first
day of class in your manila envelope.

Do NOT include the bogus "Barnum" interpretive report with it. The
Rokeach Values survey itself is not bogus -- it has been used in
sociological, politicial science, and psychological research.
