Validation of the AIM-3 Motivation Test
Are you at least 18 years of age? If
so, we would very much appreciate your participation in this study!

About the Study:
This research will help to determine the
validity of a recently developed test of human motivation called the "AIM-3."
Your participation in this research will help social scientists to better
understand individual differences in motivation.
The researchers are Drs. Michael Mills and Larry Bernard, Psychology Department,
Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, CA.
To participate, you will fill out an online survey to assess type of things that
motivate you.
In addition, you will need to recruit one other person to take a very
similar online survey to assess what that person
thinks motivates you. The person that you recruit to complete the survey
should be a sibling or friend who has known you well for at least one year.
(Please do not recruit a parent, other non-sibling relatives, or anyone
under the age of 18.) You, and the person you recruit, should
each take the survey in private. All of the answers given will remain
confidential.
The information you that you need to give the
person you recruit can be found here. (This information
will be also be presented after you complete the survey.)
Note that you will not be given any feedback regarding your answers to the
questions, so the results of the study won't provide any immediate tangible
benefit to you as a participant. However, as noted above, your
participation in this study may help research scientists better understand how
to measure individual differences in motivation. If you wish, you may
request that a summary of the aggregated, statistical findings be emailed to
you when the research is completed.
Important: It is important that you complete your questionnaire alone and
in private without consulting other people. There are no right or wrong
answers, and we encourage you to not to think about the questions too long.
Usually the first thing you think of is the best answer for you. After you are
finished with the survey, it is important that you shut down your web browser so
that your responses won't be accessible by anyone else who presses the "Back"
button of your browser.
The Study Is Voluntary and Confidential Participation in this study is
strictly voluntary, and it involves no deception. You may choose not to answer
any particular question(s), and you are free to discontinue at any time. Some of
the questions are of a personal nature. There is a very small risk that
completing the questionnaires will arouse some negative feelings about yourself.
We encourage you to talk to a counselor, or someone you feel close to, if you
feel upset or have any concerns afterwards.
What guarantees are there that I will be treated properly and my privacy will
be respected? The procedures and treatment of participants are in compliance
with the American Psychological Association’s Ethical Standards for the
Treatment of Human Subjects and have been approved by Loyola Marymount
University’s Institutional Review Board.
